How to Void a Claim
If a claim was sent by mistake, for example a duplicate, the wrong participant, the wrong payer, or the wrong service, you can void it directly from StoriiCare. Voiding tells the payer to cancel the original claim. It also unlinks the claim from its invoice, so you can correct the invoice and submit a new claim if needed.
📝 Voiding is available for electronic claims submitted through StoriiCare’s integration with Stedi.
Void, Resubmit, or Void the Invoice?
If… | Do this |
|---|---|
The claim should never have been sent (duplicate, wrong participant or payer) | Void the claim (this article) |
The claim was denied or rejected and needs correcting | Resubmit the claim. See How to Resubmit a Claim |
The invoice itself is wrong or a duplicate | Void the invoice. See Voiding an Invoice With a Claim in Progress below |
Which Claims Can Be Voided?
You can void claims with a status of Accepted or Processing. Claims that have already been denied, rejected, or voided can’t be voided.
Option 1: Void a Single Claim
Go to Billing and open the Claims tab.
Click the claim you want to void.
Click the three dots (…) in the top-right corner.
Select Void claim.
Review the details and click [Submit].
A progress window shows the void being sent. Please don’t close or navigate away until it’s complete.
Option 2: Void Multiple Claims at Once
Go to Billing and open the Claims tab.
Click [Multi Select] in the top-right corner. Checkboxes will appear next to each claim.
Select the claims you want to void.
Click [Bulk actions] and choose Void Claim(s).
Click [Submit].
The progress window shows how many claims are being voided, followed by a summary of how many succeeded and how many failed.
What Happens After You Void a Claim
The void is sent to the payer through Stedi. The claim’s status changes to Void once the payer confirms receipt. This may not happen instantly.
The claim is unlinked from its invoice. The invoice is free again, so you can edit it and submit a new claim from scratch if needed.
Every step is logged. The void request and the payer’s confirmation appear in the claim’s Recent Actions.
💡 If a claim doesn’t show as Void after a few days, open the claim, click the three dots (…), and select Stedi support. This opens a pre-filled email to Stedi’s support team with the claim details already included.
Voiding an Invoice With a Claim in Progress
If an invoice has a mistake or is a duplicate, you can void it even after a claim has been submitted for it.
Go to Billing and open the Invoices tab.
Click the invoice, then click the three dots (…).
Select Void.
You’ll see a warning that voiding an invoice with a claim in progress might create a payment that can’t be reconciled. Click [Yes] to continue.
⚠️ Why the warning? If the payer goes on to pay the original claim, StoriiCare will still record the payment. However, because the invoice is voided, the payment can’t be matched to it automatically. It will be saved with a reference showing the voided invoice and claim number, so you can reconcile it manually. To avoid this, void the claim first, then void the invoice.
For more on voiding invoices, see How to Void an Invoice.
Good to Know
The payer makes the final decision. StoriiCare sends the void request, but the payer processes it. Rules can vary by payer and state, especially for Medicaid and Medicare claims that have already been processed.
Voids can’t be undone. If you voided a claim by mistake, submit a new claim from the invoice.
Check your claims after voiding. If the original claim was already paid, contact the payer about returning or adjusting the payment.
