How to Export 837 Files (837P & 837I)

The 837 file is an electronic claim format used for submitting healthcare service information to payers for reimbursement. It follows the HIPAA-compliant ANSI X12 standard and includes detailed data about services rendered, provider information, and claim charges. In StoriiCare, this process is simplified and streamlined by pulling information directly from your existing records, ensuring accuracy and compliance.

• How it Works on StoriiCare:

  • Loops Filling Out: the data points in the 837 file exported by using StoriiCare - such as participant-specific details, business information, and claim charges - are automatically populated based on your StoriiCare setup and Invoice data.

    • Claim Charges: Pulled from invoice data.

    • Business and Tax Details: Configured under Billing Settings > 837 Settings.

    • Participant Data: Pulled from the participant’s Face Sheet to include user-specific details like demographics and insurance information.

This guide walks you through the steps to export an 837 file for claims processing directly from StoriiCare.

• Within the 837 format, there are different types depending on the type of provider or care setting:

  • 837P (Professional) — used for professional services (e.g., physicians, outpatient clinics, non-institutional providers) 

  • 837I (Institutional) — used for institutional services (hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, inpatient & outpatient institutional care)  

1. Login to StoriiCare:
   Start by logging into your StoriiCare account.

2. Navigate to Billing:
   From the dashboard, click on the Billing section to access all invoicing and claims-related tools.

3. Filter by Payer:
   Use the Payer filter to select the payer you are exporting claims for. Note: 837 files can only be exported by payer (if you would like to export multiple invoices for different payers, you will need to complete the export per payer).

4. Select Invoices:
   Click the Multi-Select option on the right-side of the page and select the boxes next to the invoices you want included in your submission.

5. Access Bulk Actions:
   Click on Bulk Actions at the top of the page to open the action menu.

6. Choose 837 File:
   From the bulk actions menu, select 837P (Professional) or 837I (Individual) File.

7. Export the File:
   Click Export to generate and download the 837 file. This file can then be imported into your claim processing platform to generate claims for submission to payers.
